The Ethiopian Runner Girmawit Gebregziabher Sunday won the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon women’s race with an exceptional time of 01:04:14.
She set a new course record for the 15th edition of the ‘world’s fastest half marathon’.
Kenyan Olympian Hellen Obiri took the second place, crossing the finish line with a time of 01:04:22, while the third place went to Sheila Chepkirui, who secured a time of 01:04:36.
“Congratulations to Gebrzihair for claiming first place in what was an incredible race from start to finish, and to the rest of the field for delivering their best effort in the return of the 2022 Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon,” said Raki Phillips, CEO of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority.
Gebrzihair was the centre of a social media backlash for looking older than her age, after winning bronze in the 5,000m race at the World Under-20 Championships in 2018.
According to IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) records, Gebrizihair was born on 10 November 2001. Despite the backlash, nobody has come out with any form of evidence proving otherwise.
