The European Union has announced a €60.5 million in humanitarian aid to Ethiopia, according to European Union (EU) country office in Addis Ababa.
EU announced €331 million humanitarian aid for greater Horn of Africa, primarily targeting food insecurity, displaced persons, refugees, disaster preparedness and education.
Hence in 2023, the EU is allocating over €60.5 million to humanitarian projects in Ethiopia, supporting actions for conflict- and drought affected population, the EU said on Wednesday in a statement.
Late last year, the European Union (EU) made a €30 million contribution to the Horn of Africa Umbrella Program Multi-Donor Trust Fund to be administered by the World Bank Group (WBG) on behalf of the donor, to support the Horn of Africa initiative priority projects.
The EU said it will continue supporting the Horn of Africa region which faces challenges that go beyond country borders including impacts of climate change, forced displacement, demographic pressures, environmental stresses various forms of conflict, trafficking of human beings and smuggling of migrants, as well as organized crimes and violent extremism
Ethiopia hosts over 875,000 refugees, mainly from South Sudan, Somalia Eritrea and Sudan and they rely almost entirely on humanitarian aid to meet their basic needs.
The statement said the EU will extend additional funding shortly.
