The European Union (EU) is threatening to suspend financial aid to Sudan if the military does not back down from its coup.
The EU is urging the Sudanese military to hand over power.
The European executive, on Tuesday, condemned the coup and threatened to suspend its financial support if the coupists maintain their position.
“This attempt to undermine Sudan’s transition to democracy is unacceptable. If the situation is not reversed immediately, there will be serious consequences for the EU’s commitment, including its financial support,” the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, warned in a statement on behalf of the 27 EU members.
The day before, he had already called on the security forces to immediately release those they had been detaining.
“The actions of the military represent a betrayal of the revolution, the transition and the legitimate demands of the Sudanese people for peace, justice and economic development,” he went on to say.
The civilian members of the government and the Prime Minister, Abdallah Hamdok were arrested and detained.
General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who is in charge of the transition and is now Sudan’s new ruler.
