Former Mozambican president Joaquim Chissano is on a private visit to Zimbabwe and on Monday discussed conservation efforts and other developmental issues with President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Speaking to journalists following a courtesy call Mnangagwa on Monday night, Chissano said the visit was meant to rekindle a long-standing relationship between the two leaders dating back to the 1970s.
“We spoke about the possibilities of dealing with each other for the development of our countries in my capacity as chairman of the Forum of Former Heads of State,” the former Mozambican leader said.
He said among the issues discussed were the need to strengthen cooperation on the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a tripartite ecotourism initiative also involving South Africa.
“We have the issue of the transfrontier. Issues of the parks. I am in the game parks.”
Chissano served as Mozambican president from 1986 to 2005 and has now assumed the role of an elder statesman.
