The deceased was a candidate in Senegal’s recent presidential vote to elect former president Macky Sall’s successor.
Mahammad Boun Abdallah Dionne was evacuated a day before the vote to Paris, France where he died on Friday at the age of 65.
Dionne was a former Prime Minister of Senegal from July 2014 to May 2019 and spent the most time in the role under the leadership of President Macky Sall (2012-2024).
In recent months and particularly the pre-election period, Mr. Dione had been given up for dead on several occasions. Those rumours were denied by his relatives who admitted that he was ill.
Bedridden and visibly very weak, he was unable to continue his electoral campaign, contenting himself with a few statements broadcast on national television.
