Former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has expressed support for the proposal to extend of the president term from four years to five years.
Mahama noted that the idea, which was first mooted by former President John Agyekum Kufour, was the better option for this present day conditions.
“I think a five-year term is better, first year, you are elected, forming your government, before settling in second year, third and fourth years you are fighting an election, you have two years to work, it makes it difficult,” Mahama said.
The Ghanaian Times reports on Tuesday that the former Ghanaian leader said at a lecture in London that the extension would allow the government time to perform better and deliver on their promises.
It added that Mahama said this while delivering a lecture on “Democracy and elections in contemporary Africa” at the Said Business School in London.
The debate for the extension of the presidential term has been mooted by many prominent Ghanaians, top among them are former President Kufour and former President Mahama, but the call has been received with mixed feelings.
While some are saying the call was in order, others are of the view that the Americans have developed with the same system and that Ghana should not be swayed from extending the mandate of presidents.
