The speakers asserted that political vigilantism has assumed complex dimensions,
and seen as an entrepreneurial venture, has the tendency to cause commotion in
the 2020 elections if not properly tackled.
The speakers, Dr. Kwasi Aning, the Director of the Faculty of Academic Affairs and
Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Centre (KAIPTC);
Commissioner of Police (CP) Kofi Boakye, Director General of Police Intelligence
and Professional Standards; and Mr. Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, former Presidential
Candidate of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), were speaking on the theme,
“Political Vigilantism and Ghana’s Democracy” on Wednesday in Accra as part of
the new year school.
They indicated that although the groups were formed by some powerful individuals
in various political parties for their selfish gains, they have become uncontrollable
and this really posed a threat to the conduct of peaceful elections.
They also argued that the groups have been making frantic efforts to justify
violence and will go at length to defend their stance.
However, the police have expressed its readiness to deal with such groups,
as stated by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Boakye in his speech.
