Currently, only 13% of the region’s population benefits from social protection measures. This highlights the urgent need for stronger social safety nets to protect vulnerable populations, especially during times of crisis.
To address this challenge, the FAO has recommended several strategies, including linking social protection programs to rural development initiatives, leveraging funds from global climate and development initiatives, improving the accuracy and reliability of data on poverty and vulnerability, and involving local communities in the design and implementation of social protection programs.
The FAO has emphasized the importance of learning from successful models, such as Cabo Verde. By investing in human capital and implementing effective social protection programs, Cabo Verde has made significant progress in reducing poverty and vulnerability.
The organization believes that by adopting similar strategies, other West African countries can improve the lives of their citizens and build more resilient communities.
