Libya has a new Prime Minister, Fathi Bachagha, who was unanimously elected by the country’s Parliament on Thursday.
The Libyan Parliament voted unanimously in favor of the former Minister of Interior Bachagha, 59.
He was in the race with Khaled Al Bibass (51), a former senior official at the same ministry
The spokesman of the Libyan parliament, Abdellah Belihak, confirmed the election in a statement.
Bachagha, the favorite for the post, succeeds Abdel Hamid Dbeibah, who was provisionally appointed head of the government of national unity last March.
However, there is still a risk of heading towards a new political crisis in Libya.
Outgoing PM Dbeibah backed by the United Nations, indicated on Tuesday that “his government will remain in office until elections are held and that he will only hand over to an elected government.”
This position was challenged by the influential Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, who said that Dbeibah’s term had expired since the postponement of the presidential and parliamentary elections on December 24, 2021.
