The ambitious project, led by the Agency for the Development and Rehabilitation of the City of Fez (ADER), involves the restoration and renovation of several zawiya mosques – religious buildings honoring saints.
This project, announced a few months ago with a budget exceeding €933,000, is now coming to life. The first phase focuses on the Tijania Zawiya mosque, located in the heart of the old city. Charte Restauration, a company based in Sale, Morocco, has been entrusted with the restoration, with a contract value of €578,893.
The core objective is to meticulously restore and strengthen this historic monument while ensuring its authenticity and safeguarding the integrity of surrounding structures.
This initiative is just the beginning. Similar contracts for the restoration of the Assadiqiya and Charadiya mosque-zawiyas are expected to be awarded soon. These projects represent a cornerstone of Fez’s strategy to preserve its architectural heritage, a vital element of the city’s cultural identity.
Expert restoration teams will meticulously address each site, ensuring the preservation of architectural details and neighboring landmarks. The restoration of the Tijania mosque-zawiya signifies a commitment to transmitting Fez’s rich history and culture to future generations.
Occupying a central place in Fez’s cultural tapestry, the Tijania mosque-zawiya is more than just a place of worship; it’s a spiritual cornerstone. Its restoration is seen as a symbolic step in the revitalization of the Fez medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The project aspires to breathe new life into this monument dedicated to one of the most influential Sufi brotherhoods in the world. This will be achieved by safeguarding its original architectural features while incorporating modern restoration techniques to guarantee its longevity.
Charte Restauration, with its proven track record in restoring historic Moroccan buildings, brings a reassuring level of expertise to the project.
The mosque restorations are part of a broader Fez medina revitalization plan that encompasses infrastructure, housing, and tourism development projects. The Moroccan authorities hope to draw more visitors and solidify Fez’s position as a premier cultural and tourist destination.
