N’Djamena, the political capital of Chad, was rocked last night by
loud explosions that caused panic among the residents.
The explosions, which resulted from the fire at the ammunition depot in Goudji, began at about 11pm and continued until midnight.
The Foreign Minister and government spokesman Abdraman Koulamallah said through the Social Media that the explosions came from “an ammunition store in Goudji” after a fire incident and called on the residents to remain calm.
In his speech, the President of Chad, Mahamat Idriss Déby, harped on the human and material losses from the fire at the ammunition depot.
Although no assessment of the losses has been made, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces has promised to launch an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and apportion blames.
Meanwhile, there are reported cases of shells and rockets littering the city, according to social media posts, but the National High Commission for Mines Clearance has warned residents not to go near the debris, shrapnel and other ammunitions found in parts of the city.
“They could explode at any time and cause considerable damage,”
the Commission said.
