Rwanda’s King Faisal Hospital on Tuesday received the first ever magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine that is expected to e provide higher resolution scans of the body’s organs and tissues and allow better diagnosis.
The machine which has a capacity of 1.5 Tesla and is of the latest technology are put into use to improve the efficiency of diagnosis and treatment of various complicated diseases, the hospital management said in a statement obtained by APA in Kigali.
Using the method, doctors can identify killer diseases such as ovarian cancer by using the enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of patients,it said.
Until recently, clinical diagnosis depends greatly on doctors’ experience in a country which counts an average of one doctor per 12,000 people.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the new medical technology provides real-time, three-dimensional views of body organs with good soft tissue contrast, making visualization of brain, spine, muscles, joints and other structures excellent.
The technology is generally safe to the patient and there is no radiation exposure, with no side effects in pregnant women or children, it said.
