APA-Durban (South Africa) A deadly 41-vehicle pile-up in South Africa’s KwaZulu Natal province has left five people dead on the highway between Hilton and Cedara towns on Monday, a official has said.
KwaZulu-Natal Minister for Transport Sipho Hlomuka said the five lost their lives as they returned home from the Easter festivities.
The regional minister said the vehicles involved in the horror accident included both light motor vehicles and minibus taxis.
The multi-vehicle crash saw the highway closed both ways for hours.
Hlomuka said the road was opened after the recovery of the bodies of the deceased, assisting survivors on scene, and transporting critical patients to healthcare facilities for urgent medical attention.
“The vehicles started to move amid long backlogs of traffic on the N3 northbound (Johannesburg bound) just before midnight,” he said.
Hlomuka commended the hard work by various emergency services during the accident.
