Five political parties have officially signed the agreement establishing South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC)-led government of national unity (GNU), the ANC announced on Monday.
The ANC said in a statement that the five parties are itself, the Democratic Alliance, the Inkatha Freedom Party, GOOD and the Patriotic Alliance.
The five parties collectively represent 273 seats or 68 percent of the 400 seats in South Africa’s National Assembly.
The GNU would ensure representation in government and legislatures by all participating parties, making decisions by consensus, with mechanisms for conflict resolution where necessary, the ANC said.
“Our objective is to create a just society that addresses poverty, spatial inequalities, food security, and the high cost of living, while protecting workers’ rights and delivering quality basic services,” the statement said.
The ANC said the GNU was dedicated to achieving rapid, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, job creation, land reform, industrialisation and infrastructure development.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, who heads the ANC, was re-elected last Friday for another five-year term and is expected to be sworn-in on Wednesday.
