Footballer Victor Wanyama would no longer represent the Kenyan national side after announcing his retirement from international football.
“All good things must come to an end eventually, and the time has come to hand over the team to the next generation so that they too can make their mark and help our country reach even greater heights” Wanyama said in a statement seen by APA on Tuesday.
Wanyama, 30 said he hopes to return to the national side but not as a player but as an official to help the Kenyan football federation off the field.
“I will still be the Harambee Stars’ biggest supporter and I will be cheering you guys on from the sidelines” he added.
Wanyama began his debut with the Harambee Stars in 2007, with 64 caps.
The former English premier league player scored seven times for his country and captained the team in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
Wanymana plays club football with Major League Soccer side CF Montreal.
He made his last appearance for the Harambee Stars in November 2020.
Before announcing his retirement from the national team, Wanyama was overlooked for Kenya’s next round of World Cup qualifiers.
Kenya has not qualified for next year’s African Nations Cup in Cameroon.
