APA – Kigali (Rwanda) Alphonse Munyantwali, a former Governor of Rwanda’s Southern Province has been elected as the new chairman of the Rwanda Football Association for the next two years.
During an extraordinary general assembly held in Kigali, Munyantwali, who was running for the top position unopposed, won the elections after collecting 50 votes out of a possible 56 from members of the FA who were allowed to vote.
His election comes just two months after he was appointed chairman of the topflight league Police FC.
He replaces outgoing Olivier Mugabo Nizeyimana who stepped down from the FA office in April last year citing personal reasons.
The resignation of Nizeyimana came after a series of scandals that have rocked the football governing body which reflected on the continued poor showing by the national team.
In April 2021, the former head of the Rwandan FA, retired Brigadier General Sekamana Jean Damascene also resigned from his position citing personal reasons.
It was not the first time the football body was led by a senior army officer.
It was led by Lt. Gen. Caezar Kayizari from 1995 to 2005 and then Maj. Gen. Jean Bosco Kazura from 2006 to 2011.
Gen. Kazura resigned as head of Rwanda’s football body in September 2011.
