Malawi’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested the country former police chief George Kainja who is accused of a bribe from controversial British businessman Zuneth Sattar.
ACB said in a statement late Thursday that Kainja connived with Sattar to award a contract for the procurement of 350,000 food ration packs for the Malawi Police Service to a company owned by the businessman.
The former police chief, who was relieved of his duties by President Lazarus Chakwera this week over his underhand dealings with Sattar, allegedly got a vehicle and a kickback from the businessman.
The bureau also announced that it had arrested Deputy Commissioner of Police Mwabi Kaluba for allegedly receiving a bribe from Sattar for involvement in the procurement contract.
The arrests came days after Chakwera announced that more than 50 public officials and 30 business executives have been sucked into a scandal in which Sattar is accused of splashing millions of dollars to influence the outcome of procurement contracts for Malawi ministries and government agencies.
One of those accused of involvement in the scandal is Vice President Saulos Chilima. He has denied the allegations.
