APA – N’djamena (Chad) – On the morning of Wednesday August 30, soldiers announced that they were putting an end to the regime of Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba.
In a statement issued early Wednesday evening, Chad said it was following developments in Gabon with great attention and concern.
In the early hours of the morning, a dozen officers from various branches of the Gabonese army announced that they were putting an end to the regime of President Ali Bongo Ondimba. The latter had just been proclaimed winner of the presidential election of August 26, 2023, for a third term. The coup was condemned by the African Union, France and other partners of Gabon.
The Chadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its spokesman, calls for a return to constitutional order.
Chad has called for a meeting of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), while asking that the security and physical integrity of the deposed president be ensured.
ECCAS is a regional organization comprising 15 states. Its current president is Congolese President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi. The organization has not yet reacted to the coup in Gabon.
