“His Excellency, Mr. President is delighted to return to his countrymen. He would like to thank his brother, His Majesty the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, very warmly for the quality of his welcome and the invaluable support provided throughout his stay in the Cherifian Kingdom,” the statement said.
President Bongo suffered a stroke in October 2018 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and was initially treated at King Fahd’s hospital, where he remained for more than a month before being transferred to Morocco.
His health problems have fuelled debates in Gabon. For the opposition, the head of state was no longer able to assume his duties, which meant declaring the power vacuum. Such a speech has been undermined by supporters of the head of state who have always argued that he is doing better after his stroke.
