A Gambian court has issued an arrest warrant for an alleged member of a hit squad under former President Yahya Jammeh, APA can report on Friday.
The Banjul Magistrate Court Thursday ordered for the arrest of Sanna Manjang, a former member of the Gambia Armed Forces who is alleged to have been a notorious Junglar widely blamed for killings, disappearances and torture during Jammeh’s 22 years in power.
The court had granted a police request for Manjang to appear for trial over his alleged role with the Junglars, a hit squad which took direct orders from Jammeh.
It all began when Interpol’s Washington branch last Tuesday requested the Gambia Police Force to clarify whether Manjang was still a fugitive wanted for prosecution and advised that a bench warrant be issued to that effect.
The Banjul Magistrate Court’s warrant was to ensure Manjang faces justice for his role in alleged crimes committed between 1994 when Jammeh came to power through a coup and 2017 when he lost an election and fled into exile in Equatorial Guinea.
Manjang was on a number of occasions adversely mentioned by witnesses testifying before Gambia’s truth and reconciliation commission over his alleged role in human rights violations that include torture, rape, murder and enforced disappearance.
He was described by some truth commission witnesses as an operative whose reputation had a notoriety to it.
Manjang has been living in exile in the lead up to the 2016 presidential elections which Jammeh lost to current President Adama Barrow.
