The Gambia government Wednesday announced a ban on the cross-border sale of subsidised fertiliser.
Ebrima G. Sankareh, spokesperson and presidential adviser in a statement said the sale ran contrary to measures regulating the usage of heavily-subsidised fertiliser for the exclusive benefit of Gambian farmers.
He said the government was acting after it came to its attention that the fertiliser is being sold across the border.
”To curb this malpractice, The Gambia government immediately instructs all Local Government Authorities, The Gambia Police Force and sister security agencies to arrest culprits and confiscate fertiliser en route to destinations beyond our borders” his statement said.
Sankareh’s statement also urged the public to report all fertiliser smuggling attempts nationwide.
The government last month reduced the price of a bag of fertiliser from D1150 to D1100 as part of its bid to support farmers and enhance agricultural productivity.
