The Gambia is poised to issue new generation banknotes in June without the features of former President Yahya Jammeh on the denominations.
In a statement on its Facebook page on Thursday, the Central Bank of The Gambia said releasing the new paper currencies will be preceded by a public awareness exercise so that people will be familiar with their security features.
The new notes include the 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 denominations and none carry the image of the former president.
The 10 and 200 dalasi denominations currently in circulation bear his features.
The government of President Adama Barrow had made it its priority since it came into authority two years ago to phase out the current denominations in circulation as Gambians complain about the poor quality of the papers.
Many banknotes even those issued from banks wear and tear after a few years in circulation unlike previous ones dating back to the first republic.
Colorful specimens of the proposed new notes with birds on them have since been released for public viewing.
