The Gambia’s population has surged to 2, 422, 712, according to the latest census report released on Wednesday.
Mainland Africa’s smallest country last held a population census in 2013.
Launching its report on the just concluded 2024 census, The Gambia Bureau of Statistics (GBoS) said at 1.24 million (52 percent), the female population has outstripped the male population stands at 1.19 million (49 percent).
A summary of the report suggests that Brikama Administrative Region maintains its reputation as Gambia’s most densely population area, accounting for 47.5 percent of the people living in the country.
Kanifing municipality, holding 15.7 percent of the population is second while Basse at 10.8 percent is third.
The capital Banjul remains the least populated area holding just 1.1 percent of the general population.
Mansankonko, Kerewan, Kuntaur and Janjanbureh account for 3.7 percent, 10.3 percent, 4.9 percent and 6.1 percent of the population respectively.
According to other data from the census, Gambians are the majority population followed by Senegalese who at 40, 849 (1.7 percent) constitute the largest foreign group living in the country. They are followed by Guineans at 36, 077 or 1.5 percent of the population. Other foreign groups captured by the census consist of Sierra Leoneans and Nigerians who account for 1 percent.
