The Minority Leader of Parliament in Ghana, Mr. Osei Kyei Mensa Bonsu, has announced the discovery of over 1.7 billion tonnes of iron ore in the ongoing exploration at Tatale/Sanguli District in the Northern Region.
Speaking in Accra on Tuesday, the lawmaker said that the mineral deposit could hit 3 billion tonnes by the end of the exercise.
According to him, the deposit discovered is from the area that has already been assessed and that the rock formation in the area of discovery extends to Togo.
“I believe that when we are done with the reassessment, we will be having huge volumes of the mineral,” he said.
He noted that the discovery was a boost to the iron and steel industry in the country, adding that the ‘Ghana Iron and Steel Development Corporation Bill’, passed by Parliament recently, was awaiting presidential assent for exploitation to start.
