The former president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Mr. Kwesi Nyantakyi, has been charged with three offenses, including fraud by the Accra High Court on Wednesday.
He was in court with a former member of the Association’s Executive Committee, Abdulai Alhassan, who is also facing two charges of fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud.
A Principal State Attorney, Victoria Asiedua, told an Accra High Court on Wednesday that the two individuals executed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of a non-existent company, claiming to be attracting sponsorship for the Ghana Premier League.
They were alleged to have demanded $12 million from the supposed investors, promising to secure them major contracts in Ghana.
The court heard that Nyantakyi, who was exposed in the Anas Aremeyaw football corruption video in 2018, was caught on camera promising to distribute the said money as follows; $5 million for the President, $3 million for the Vice President, $2 million for the Roads and Highway’s Minister, $1 million for his Deputy with the rest reserved for Nyantakyi and Alhassan.
The former football administrators were exposed in the documentary, using the name of the President to peddle influence.
Since the documentary done by Tiger Eye PI was broadcast in June 2018, the government had been under pressure to take action against the main target of the investigations, Kwesi Nyantakyi.
Nyantakyi and Alhassan have been admitted to bail in the sum of ¢1 million with three sureties, one to be justified each. They are also required to report every Friday at the police CID. The case has been adjourned to March 25.
