Ghanaians on Sunday in Cape Coast trooped out in large numbers to mark the country’s independence anniversary from Britain in 1957.
The event, which has the theme “Working together, bouncing back together”, was held at the Cape Coast Stadium in the Central Region of Ghana.
In his address at the 65th Independence Day Celebration at the stadium, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, appealed to Ghanaians to safeguard Ghana’s reputation of being the beacon of democracy.
He urged Ghanaians to uphold democratic principles and resist attempts by persons, who seek to destabilize the peace and unity of the country.
President Akufo-Addo reminded Ghanaians that the harsh economic conditions in the country was global and not unconnected with Covid-19 pandemic and therefore not peculiar to Ghana and that the government was making efforts to tackle the situation and improve on the welfare of the people.
Speaking on recent calls from some people that Ghana was ripe for coup, President Akufo Addo assured that the government would spare no effort to protect Ghana’s stability and democratic credentials to enable the development of the nation to proceed in freedom, order and in peace.
The anniversary celebration also witnessed colourful parades by school children, military and paramilitary forces and other groups. Traditional rulers, chiefs, top politicians and industry executives were also in attendance.
Among the foreign dignitaries, who attended the ceremony is the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, who is the Special Guest of Honour and heads of diplomatic missions in the country.
