Ghana’s Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) has
announced that the country will undertake a referendum to decide on the
proposal for metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs)
to be elected.
The elections will be held as part of the district level elections that elect members for the various district assemblies.
The Minister of MLGRD, Hajia Alima Mahama, who announced this in Accra on Wednesday at the meet-the-press series in Accra, said the roadmap for the national referendum seeks to amend some portions of the constitution to allow for the election of MMDCEs, which has been purely political appointments in the past.
According to the Ghanaian Times report on Thursday, the referendum seeks to amend some portions of Article 55 (3) and 243 (1) of the 1992 Constitution that prevents political parties from participating in district level elections, including the election of MMDCEs.
