The telecommunications sector of the country has encountered about 2,000 fibre cuts in the first of this year.
The data released by the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications said the industry also suffered 600 incidents of theft and abuse of their system, resulting in poor services to over 18 million subscribers.
The Chamber therefore observed that the mobile industry has seen high prevalence of fibre cuts, cable/fuel/battery thefts, and vandialisation to members’ infrastructure, which remains an unfortunate challenge to the sector.
The tendency is seen as a threat to the move by the nation to promote digitisation of various services and addresses.
The cuts, which are mainly done by developers, constructions, and road contractors, among others, is costing the service providers about $30 million.
The Business and Financial Times reports on Tuesday that the Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber, Ing. Ken Ashigbey, said that the data they gathered explained the various challenges facing the telecommunications sector.
