The National Communications Authority (NCA) of Ghana on Thursday shut down two pro-opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) radio stations for allegedly operating illegally.
The stations are Radio Gold and Radio XYZ.
According to the NCA, the licence of Radio Gold expired in the year 2000, while that of Radio XYZ expired in the year 2016, but they have failed to renew them.
Some officials of the NCA accompanied by some police officers, stormed the offices of the two pro-opposition stations to shut them down at exactly 2pm local time, thereby raising political concerns about the move by the NCA.
Meanwhile, the stations were shut down at a time the National Council of Elders of the NDC were having a press conference, which was being aired live on the stations.
The NDC council was holding the conference to register their displeasure at the supposed harassment of their National Party Chairman, Mr. SAmuel Ofosu Ampofo, by the Criminal Investigations Department of the Police.
The closure of the stations, which came as a surprise to many listeners of the stations, suspected foul play by the commission.
The closure of the stations has come barely two weeks after the celebration of the World Press Freedom Day.
