The police in Ho in the Volta Region have arrested 81 more people suspected to be supporters of the leaders of a secessionist group that was planning to declare independence of the Volta Region.
The suspects, including women, were arrested as members of the Homeland Study Group, the main body which has been agitating for the autonomy of the Volta Region in a joint military and police operation.
They were suspected to be planning to stage a demonstration to clamour for the release of eight leaders of the group arrested in Ho on Monday by the police.
The Volta Regional Police Commander, DCOP Edward Oduro-Kwarteng, told the Ghanaian Times that they were arrested, following intelligence reports that the suspects were gathering themselves for a massive demonstration in Ho to demand for the release of their leaders without prior notice to the police.
In a related development, an Accra High Court has granted bail to the leader of the group, Charles K. Kudzodzi, 85, and ordered him to report to the Police Criminal Investigative Department (CID) every two weeks.
Meanwhile, seven members of the group were, however, remanded in police custody and will reappear in court on May 22, 2019.
