The directive by the Ghana Police Service that no participants in the scheduled street protest against the Bank of Ghana (BoG) will be allowed anywhere near the premises of the regulator of the banking industry is one of the trending stories in the Ghanaian press on Tuesday.
The Graphic reports that the Ghana Police Service has stated that no participants in the scheduled street protest against the Bank of Ghana (BoG) will be allowed anywhere near the premises of the regulator of the banking industry.
The protest being organised by the Minority in Parliament is dubbed #OccupyBOG is slated for Tuesday (October 3, 2023).
Organisers of the protest, the Minority side in Parliament, says the street protest is against some inconsistencies in the national economy recorded in the current administration of the BoG.
Describing the BoG as a security zone, the police said they were prepared to ensure security, law and order for the planned street protest and insisted the route does not include the BoG premises or the street in front of the BoG.
“The name of the protest does not determine the rout of the protest. We have agreed on the routes and that is the routes that will be used,” said the Public Affairs Director of the Ghana Police Service, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, during a media briefing on the preparedness of the police for the demonstration on Monday.
She reminded the demonstrators to adhere to the route, with the demonstration commencing at the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange through Adabraka, Ridge Roundabout, National Theatre Traffic Light, High Court Complex Traffic Light and Atta Mills Highway.
From there, the protestors would then make a U-Turn at the National Lotteries and end the protest at the Independence Square.
The newspaper says that the flag of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is to fly at half-mast following the death of Mrs Theresa Kufuor, wife of former President J.A. Kufuor.
The former first lady died at her home in Peduase on the Aburi mountain on Sunday afternoon (October 1, 2023).
She was 87 years old.
The NPP in a statement signed and issued on Monday by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong stated “Mrs Kufuor was a beacon for female advancement, fostering initiatives to inspire and empower both young and adult females in various facets of life. The members of the ruling NPP, together with all Ghanaians whose lives were positively touched by her, extend our deepest condolences to former President John Agyekum Kufuor, their children, and the entire family.”
“We stand united with you in this time of sorrow, praying that the Almighty God grants all of us the fortitude to bear this great loss. In tribute to the memory of the late Mrs Kufuor, the NPP directs that all Party flags across the country be flown at half-mast for the next seven days. May her gentle soul continue to rest in perfect peace until we meet again on the resurrection morning. Damirifa Due!”
The Ghanaian Times reports that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) have been told to fully enforce their bye-laws in addressing sanitation challenges confronting the nation.
The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Dr Freda Akosua Prempeh, who made the call said the sanitation situation continues to worsen by the day in some parts of the country which according to her was unacceptable.
She gave the directive when she toured some flood prone areas in Accra at the weekend to mark this year’s World Cleanup Day.
She said the rampant filth, stench, and the deliberate litter of plastic rubber and bottles into the drains and gutters pose health risk and a major contributory factor to the country’s perennial flooding.
The Minister and her entourage including some officials of Zoomlion, district health officers from the Ghana Health Service and staff of the Ministry could not stand the stench that emanated from the gutters at Tema Station, the biggest commercial lorry station in Accra.
Other places visited included Glefe and some parts of the Tema motorway, where Dr Prempeh expressed worry about the poor involvement of hawkers and resi¬dents in the cleanup exercise.
She said although, the government was committing resources to ensure a clean environment for the citizenry, there was the need to urgently enforce the sanitation laws to thoroughly deal with those who flout them.
She was optimistic that, this would help minimise the poor sanitation condition that posed health risk, and urged the public to report those who litter to the MMDAs.
Dr Prempeh cautioned residents and hawkers who refused to take part in the exercise adding that “they would not be spared in any subsequent activity aimed at cleaning the environment.”
She said her Ministry would strongly collaborate with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to ensure every Ghanaian and foreigners participate in sanitation activities in the country.
The newspaper says that Genser Energy, a leading energy company in Ghana, has donated gas turbine package to the Takoradi Technical University (TTU) in the Western Region to enhance handson learning and research for students and teaching staff of the institution.
The 5.2 megawatt gas turbine comprises gas turbines ancillary, generator, reduction gear box, air inlet filter system/duct/ventilator, fuel conditioning system, lube oil cooler system and hurst boiler that will help the students to understand the processes of generating power on site.
The donation was premised on Genser’s dedication to supporting technical education in Ghana.
At a ceremony to hand over the turbine to the university last Tuesday, Mr Daniel Ayi, Vice-President of Operations, Genser Energy Ghana, said the gesture by the independent power producer was aimed at building the technical capacity of students.
“This gas turbine package is not only a piece of machinery; it is a powerful tool for handson learning. It will provide students with practical knowledge and skills that will prepare them for real-world challenges,” he said.
He noted, “This kind of experiential learning is invaluable – it bridges the gap between theory and practice, creating a holistic educational environment reflecting Genser Energy’s dedication to nurturing technical knowledge and fostering talent.”
Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, Vice-Chancellor of the Takoradi Technical University (TTU), ex-pressed his profound gratitude to Genser for the invaluable support to the university.
He said in this digital age of rapid technological advancement, the demand for skilled professionals was higher than ever before, and it was imperative that the youth are equipped with the necessary tools, knowledge and attitude to thrive in this evolving landscape.
“However, this task cannot be achieved by this institution alone. It requires a collective effort from all stakeholders, especially industry, to help bridge the gap between the classroom and the world of work and that is exactly what Genser Energy Ltd has done today,” he stated.
