The press in Ghana on Friday focuses on the coming into effect on Thursday the announced reduction in port charges by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The Daily Graphic reports that the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced the re-configuration of its Pre-Arrival Assessment Reporting Processes to reflect the new reduction in port taxes, which were to take effect on Thursday.
Mr. Isaac Crentsil, the Commissioner of Customs, told the paper that following a government policy to reduce the home delivery value on vehicles by 30 percent and 50 percent reduction in the benchmark values for general imports.
He noted that his administration has issued a directive to effect the implementation of the policy, as announced by Vice President Dr. Bawumia on Wednesday during a town hall meeting in Accra.
The Ghanaian Times, for its part, said a Prof. Joshua Owusu-Sekyere, has called for the criminalisation of activities of water polluters as part of the grand efforts preserve water bodies in the country.
He said, “Those who pollute water bodies should be prosecuted for engaging in such acts,” arguing that if nothing was done about the current trend in water pollution, the nation would soon struggle to access potable water.
He made the call during his inaugural lecture at the University of Cape Coast on the topic, “In the abundance of water, the food is thirsty”.
The Business and Financial Times said the government has set aside an amount of $1.5 billion to finance senior high school (SHS) infrastructure projects.
