The assurance by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that Ghana is the safest place in West Africa and the attempt of a frustrated man to commit suicide in Parliament dominate the headlines of Ghanaian newspapers on Friday.
The Ghanaian Times says “Ghana is safest country in West Africa…President declares”, and that he has therefore invited Africans in the Diaspora to come back and explore investment opportunities in the country.
Addressing the House of Assembly of St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Wednesday, President Akufo-Addo said: “In today’s world, where sadly crime and terror have become part of everyday life, I can say that Ghana is certainly the safest country in West African region and remains one of the few places on earth where we are not embarrassed to see ourselves as each other’s keeper.”
He noted that the people of Ghana are the greatest assets per their receptive and wonderful nature.
The Daily Graphic, for its part, reports that a 35-year old man, Kojo Mensah, has found himself in the grips of the police, following an attempt to take his own life while Parliament was in session in Accra on Thursday.
The man, suspected to have come from the Western Region, jumped from the public gallery into the chamber of the House, in an attempt to kill himself, but was restrained by the Parliamentary Police Unit (PPU).
He shouted, “I’ll kill myself! I’ll kill myself!” and attempted to jump, attracting the attention of the police, who arrested him and placed him in custody.
