The announcement by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that the next Population and Housing Census (PHC) has been scheduled between April and May 2021 is the leading story in the Ghanaian press on Wednesday.
The Graphic reports that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that the next Population and Housing Census (PHC) has been scheduled between April and May 2021.
He said funding had been secured for the census, and that the government was committed to conducting the exercise, in spite of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
President Akufo-Addo said this when he launched the 2017/2018 Agriculture Census National Report at the Jubilee House in Accra yesterday.
Although the agriculture census is supposed to be done every 10 years, the current one — conducted in 2017/2018 — comes 33 years after the last one.
The first was in 1963, the second in 1975 and the third in 1985.
President Akufo-Addo described as shameful the fact that for over three decades the agriculture census had not taken place.
As a result, he said, policy — prior to his assumption of office — had been based largely on guesswork, and that it was no wonder that that period witnessed systematic decline in agriculture.
The newspaper says that leading political parties in Ghana have given different interpretations into their positions on the ballot paper for the 2020 Presidential Elections scheduled for December 7.
The flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and that of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), former President John Dramani Mahama, on Tuesday picked up the first and the second spots, respectively, on the ballot paper.
While the NDC have described their spot on the ballot as “the second coming” of Mr. Mahama, the NPP says the number one spot was perfect for the party.
A few minutes after the balloting was conducted, supporters of the various political parties took to social media with interpretations on the positions of their flag bearers on the ballot paper.
The Graphic also reports that Robotics team from Prempeh College have been crowned champions of this year’s Robofest World Championship held virtually last Saturday due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The team, Mikogolf, one of the three from the school that were among the six representatives from Ghana, beat 21 other contenders in the senior game GolfBowl.
This is the third time Prempeh College has won the competition, having won in 2013 and 2016.
Other teams from Ghana, AgyengoGolf and EddyGolf, both from Prempeh College, placed third and fifth respectively in the same senior game
In the junior category, a team from Mount Olivet Methodist Academy, MomaGolf, finished third from 23 competing teams in the GolfBowl.
The Times reports that the Ghana Post Company is poised to move beyond mere sending of mails to becoming a real-time service provider in the global postal industry, Board Chairman, Mr. George Afedzie, has said.
“Many believe Ghana Post is losing its weight but I will rather say that the company is gaining grounds to become an essential service provider to the world.
“We have come from a perennial loss-making company to a profit-making company, recording revenue increase of 43 percent from 2017 to 2019 and this has been possible by a four-year strategic plan that answers the question of our survival beyond mails,” he said.
Mr. Afedzi was speaking at a ceremony in Accra yesterday, to launch 10,000 postal stamps in commemoration of 60 years of Ghana-China relations.
The commemorative stamps, designed with a background of the Ghana flag, comes in bigger and smaller sizes to reflect the long-standing bilateral relations between the two countries.
