The assurance by the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) that the Receiver of the collapsed banks has settled all payments due depositors dominate the headlines of Ghanaian press on Wednesday.
The Graphic reports that the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, has said the Receiver of the collapsed banks has settled all payments due depositors.
The governor said 95 percent of the customers of savings and loans companies, microfinance institutions and finance houses had also been paid their deposits and investments.
Dr. Addison, briefing the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, at the BoG yesterday on a number of issues in the financial sector, especially the banking crisis, said there was just about five percent of depositors of the non-bank financial institutions which had large amounts of money to be settled that were swapped with bonds which were to be retired over five years.
He also indicated that there were a few delays regarding depositors of the GN Bank/GN Savings and Loans and First Allied Savings and Loans which were cleared last three weeks.
The governor added that the government had provided a bond worth GH¢1.7 billion, out of which GH¢700 million had been monetised, with which the Receiver was also working at clearing the last people that were left in this segment.
The newspaper says that the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has said that the Akufo-Addo administration has the goal to make Ghana the hub of digitization in West Africa.
According to him, this goal will be achieved if Ghanaians will renew the mandate of the New Patriotic Party in the upcoming presidential elections in December, 2020.
He said this in a live interview on Accra-based radio station, Peace FM’s morning show ”Kokrokoo” on Tuesday.
Dr.Bawumia is spearheading the digitization agenda of the government to formalise and transform Ghana’s economy and further bring about inclusion.
The Vice President in February, 2020 launched a mobile application designed to make the purchase of electricity credits and the payment of bills more convenient for customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The Times reports that Africa has been declared free from wild polio by the independent body, the Africa Regional Certification Commission.
Nigeria is the last African country to be declared free from wild polio, having accounted for more than half of all global cases less than a decade ago.
The vaccination campaign in Nigeria involved a huge effort to reach remote and dangerous places under threat from militant violence and some health workers were killed in the process.
Polio is a virus which spreads from person to person, usually through contaminated water. It can lead to paralysis by attacking the nervous system.
Two out of three strains of wild polio virus have been eradicated worldwide.
The newspaper says that the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has lauded the outgoing Danish Ambassador, Ms Tove Degnbol, for her contribution to the strengthening of the bilateral relations between Ghana and Denmark.
She said over the last five years, Ms. Degnbol’s commitment to the relations led to the realisation of the new strategic sector cooperation between Danish and Ghanaian authorities in maritime and statistics and other areas.
Ms. Botchwey, who is the Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, lauded the envoy when she paid a farewell call on the minister in Accra as she had ended her tenure as the Danish Ambassador.
Ms Degnbol, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, was appointed Ambassador in 2015 to replace Ms. Margit Thomsen, who served in the same capacity for two years.
According to Ms. Botchwey, the envoy’s “highly distinguished work in Ghana” further enhanced the fruitful relations between the two countries through the exchange of high level visits, including that of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.
She said during the four-day visit in November 2017, a number of Memoranda of Understanding and agreements were signed, including a letter of Intent between Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC) and Bluetown Aps.
Others, she said, included the Base of Pyramid Partnership Agreement between Novo Nordisk Pharma Gulf FZ-LLC and the National Catholic Secretariat with regard to the Health Directorate of the National Catholic Health Service.
