Ghana has recorded a trade surplus of $1.7 billion in 2018, APA learns here Friday.
The Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, said in Accra Thursday that the figure represented 2.7 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He noted that the country’s exports totalled $14.87 billion, while it imported goods to the tune of $13.09 billion in 2018, enabling it to record the $1.7 billion trade surplus.
In a speech read on his behalf at a National Export Development Strategy workshop held in Ada in the Greater Accra Region on Thursday, the minister said, “this surplus is mainly attributed to the oil sector”.
He said Ghana’s exports witnessed a significant increase from $10.61 billion in 2016 to $14.86 billion in 2018.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Exports Promotion Authority (GEPA), Ms. Afua Asabea Asare, said her outfit had initiated key programmes to promote non-traditional exports.
