President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana arrived in The Gambia on Friday, July 12 for a one-day working visit.
He is expected to meet with his Gambian counterpart to discuss, among other things, Ghana’s candidacy for the position of Secretary General of the Commonwealth.
The Ghanaian Head of State was welcomed on arrival in Banjul by President Adama Barrow, with whom he had discussions at the State House in the presidential palace.
After the lunch hosted in his honour by President Barrow, President Akufo-Addo would travel to Barra (west), where he would meet the Ghanaian ECOMIG detachment.
The Ghanaian troops were deployed there under the banner of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and had been present in The Gambia since 2017, the year, the former President Yahya Jammeh was forced into exile after refusing to concede defeat to Adama Barrow.
In the early evening, the two Heads of State would address a press conference.
Gambia’s support for Ghana’s candidacy for the post of Commonwealth Secretary General is expected to be the major focus of the news conference.
