The 2019 May Day Celebration dominates the headlines of Ghanaian newspapers on Thursday.
The Daily Graphic reported that the government owed the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) 1.7 billion Cedis (about $34 million)
According to the newspaper, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo disclosed that the Ministry of Finance has informed his office that it was ready to pay 200 million Cedis (about $4 million) to SSNIT as well as the payment of 700 million Cedis (about $140 million) to the national pension trust.
The Ghanaian Times, on the other hand, gave prominence to the launch of the “Ghana beyond Aid” Charter by President Nana Addo during the celebration of the May Day in Accra, which is expected to make Ghana self-reliant by using available natural and human resources in the country for its development.
The newspaper also reported that the labour unions in Tema, the Harbour City called on government to review the contract on expansion of the Tema Harbour.
They said there should be an urgent review of the government contract agreement with the Meridian Port Services (MPS).
The Labour Unions include Local Government Workers’ Union, Industry, Commerce and Finance Workers’ Union and Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union.
The Ghanaian Times reported that thousands of workers defied heavy downpour to celebrate May Day at the Black Star Square in Accra.
The Daily Graphic also reported that the Convention Peoples’ Party (CPP), which was founded by Osagyefo, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, urged the government to protect workers from bullying in the hands of expatriate employers.
