The Supreme Court ruling that government cannot just remove heads of public corporations and the announcement of the ban on the use of mobile phones by health workers during work hours dominate the headlines of Ghanaian newspapers on Monday.
The Daily Graphic says the Supreme Court has declared as unconstitutional, the dismissal of chief executive officers and heads of institutions by successive government in the event of a change in political power.
In a unanimous decision, a seven-member panel of the court presided over by Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, upheld that the constitution of the country protects the appointment of such officers, who are public officers.
However, it added that the removal of such persons must be done in accordance with the laws of the country and not by mere political changes.
The Ghanaian Times, for its part, said the Ghana Health Services (GHS) is considering placing a ban on the use of mobile phones by health professionals in the various facilities during official duty.
The Director General of GHS, Dr. Anthony Nisah-Asare, who made this known, said this has become necessary due to the numerous complaints from customers of poor services from health workers, who often attached importance to their phones during work hours to the detriment of their work.
