The Government Statistician, Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim, has announced that Ghana’s inflation rate for January 2024 increased to 23.5 per cent, up from 23.2 recorded in December 2023.
Prof. Annim told a news conference in Accra on Wednesday that the inflation figures for January recorded a slight increase from the December figure and unfortunately marks a return to its upward trend after five consecutive months of decline.
He said that the price index for January 2024 was 204,5 relative to 165.6 for January 2023.
According to him, the increase in year-on-year inflation was primarily attributed to a significant surge in non-food items, including housing, clothing, and transport. Non-food inflation rose to 20.5 per cent in January 2024, up from 18.7 per cent in December 2023.
He explained that food inflation continued its downward trajectory, dropping to 27.1 per cent in January 2024 from 28.7 percent in December 2023.
On month-on-month inflation, food inflation stood at 1.6 per cent, while non-food inflation was 2.4 per cent.
He added that inflation for imported items was 21.9 per cent, while the inflation figure for locally produced items was 23.8 per cent
