The president-elect has called for an immediate cessation of post-election violence and emphasized the need for national unity.
Ghana, recognized for its democratic stability in Africa, is currently experiencing turmoil in the aftermath of the December 7, 2024 general elections. In a public statement following his victory over Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Mahama condemned the attacks on government offices and infrastructure, characterizing them as acts of sabotage.
“These acts must stop immediately. I strongly condemn any attempts to destabilize our institutions during this transition,” he said, urging the youth to redirect their frustrations into constructive initiatives aimed at rebuilding the country.
Mahama also called on outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo and the security forces to take swift action to restore order amid the clashes and vandalism that have erupted in various regions.
The violence primarily involves supporters from the two main parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who accuse each other of inciting chaos to influence the political transition.
Reiterating his commitment to fostering a peaceful and prosperous Ghana, the president-elect stated, “It is time to demonstrate our determination to rebuild our nation in unity and understanding.”
