The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Affail Money, has condemned the closure of Radio Gold and XYZ by the National Communication Authority (NCA) on Thursday.
Speaking at the World Press Freedom Day observation by the Central Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association in Cape Coast on Friday, Money said it was out of place for the NCA to close down the two stations a few day after the celebration of the International World Press Freedom Day.
According him, the closure will affect Ghana’s credibility on press freedom and a dent on the country’s democratic credentials.
The two pro-opposition radio stations Radio XYZ and Radio Gold were closed down for defaulting in license renewal payment by the NCA.
The NCA said Radio Gold’s license expired on September 6, 2000, while that of Radio XYZ expired on May 8, 2016.
The NCA on Thursday afternoon shut down the two radio stations for operating without valid authorization.
The closure has heightened tension between the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) with the politicians of the two parties trading words on radio.
