The Governor of Cabo Delgado province, Mozambique, Valige Tauabo officially on Tuesday reopened the commercial port of Mocimboa da Praia after more than two years of closure following Ansar Al Sunnah terrorist capture and control of the port city which halted all port activities, according to an official statement seen by APA here.
The reopening ceremony included among others the operationalisation of the first cargo ship to be used by the city residents and surrounding areas since its closure.
The Governor thanked the joint security forces of Rwanda and Mozambique for their effort in normalising the security situation in Mocimboa Da Praia leading to the reopening of the port.
Rwanda was the first African country to send troops to support the Mozambican army in fighting jihadists in the northern Cabo Delgado region.
More than 3,100 mainly African forces, led by a heavy Rwandan contingent, are deployed to northern Mozambique, and the government says it has regained control over most of the region.
Moçambiquan and Rwandan forces notched up a major victory in August last year, when they drove the fighters out of their de facto headquarters in the port city of Mocimboa da Praia.
