The Guinea Bissau national team, the Wild Dogs on Friday recorded a huge upset in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier when they defeated the Super Eagles of Nigeria 1-0.
The match played at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja saw the star studded Super Eagles team dominating the match, but their skilful efforts could not translate to goals.
The visitors in the 29th minute of the match, against the run of proceedings, scored the lone goal of the match, when Guinea Bissau’s Mama Balde collected a long pass close to the 18-yard box of the Super Eagles from his team mate and took a powerful drive that beat the Super Eagles goalkeeper.
In the second half of the match, the Head Coach of the Super Eagles, José Peseiro, made some changes to strengthen the attacking force of the team, but the Nigerian team failed to get the equaliser.
With this defeat, Guinea Bissau lead Group A with 7 points, while Nigeria place second with 6 points.
The two teams are scheduled to play the second leg of the qualifier at the Estadio 24 de Setembro in Bissau on Monday, March 27.
