Guinea-Bissau’s Umaro Sissoco Embalo has made a dramatic U-turn days after announcing he would not be running for a second term as the country’s president.
51-year-old Embalo who served as prime minister betwee 2016 and 2018 said after a rethink, he would make himself ”available to continue as president based on the will of Bissau-guineans”.
He was elected president in 2020.
The former military officer had surprised his compatriots by announcing that he was following the advise from his wife not to run for president.
Umaro Sissoco Embaló told his party supporters on Sunday: “If I say I wouldn’t run for a second term, if you understand I should, I’m at your disposal. I ain’t above you”.
He added: “If you understand that I am still the solution, I will be in front of you”.
