Pereire heads the ruling African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), winner of the last legislative elections.
The PAIGC won the March 10 legislative elections by securing 47 out of the 102 seats in Parliament, which hands it the de facto position of Prime Minister.
He is to replace Aristides Gomes, who has been PM since April 2018.
However, shy of an absolute majority, Pereira’s party has already announced a parliamentary advocacy agreement to govern with the United People’s Assembly party, the Democratic Party of Guinea-Bissau (APU/PDGB), the Union for Change (UM) and the New Democracy Party (NDP).
In the early hours of Monday, these parties signed an agreement to ratify their alliance to govern the country together for the next four years.
The opposition will be composed of the Movement for Democratic Alternation (MADEM-G15) and the Social Renewal Party (PRS).
