The defense attorney of the former Prime Minister had filed an order for release with the Supreme Court.
In detention since April 6, 2022 for “embezzlement of public funds, illicit enrichment and money laundering,” Ibrahima Kassory Fofana, the former head of the Guinean government was hoping for a provisional release. After several months of postponement, the court handed down
its ruling on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, concerning the appeal in cassation filed by his lawyers.
Despite a demonstration by women supporters of Mr. Fofana in front of the Supreme Court, the decision was not in his favor. In its ruling, the Supreme Court dismissed his appeal, declaring that his appeal “is unfounded,” according to Mr. Dinah Sampil, one of the members of the
collective of lawyers for the former Prime Minister.
This means, according to the lawyer, that it is the ruling of the Court of Repression of Economic and Financial Offenses (CRIEF) that will continue to produce its effects against their client.
Most of the appeals have been rejected for formal defects, regrets Mr. Sidiki Berete, asking: “But basically, in the Republic of Guinea, preventive detention is four months renewable once. Kassory has done eleven months of detention. So how can the Supreme Court say that it
is not founded?”
Accusing the justice system of being a toy, the defense of Kassory Fofana promises to plead his case. “The struggle continues. On March 14, 2023, we will be there too because we will never disarm,” promises Me Sidiki Berete.
