The National Front for the Defence of the Constitution (FNDC), which brings together political and civil society stakeholders in Guinea on Thursday rejected proposed talks with President Alpha Condé over the adoption of a new constitution.
In its statement to the press, the FNDC described the president’s address to the nation as a “failure” in relation to the serious socio-economic and political crisis in the country.
According to opponents of Condé regime who are backed by civil society, his address reinforced “confusion, anxiety among citizens and uncertainty among investors.”
Warning the occupant of Sekhuturya Palace, they said: “Alpha Condé’s yesterday speech shows a glaring discrepancy with reality. Popular mobilization against the Civil Status Coup or 3rd Mandate is more than ever a people’s duty that the FNDC courageously embodies. The FNDC said there will be no consultation, let alone discussion about a constitutional change” .
The FNDC said it is mobilized to “prevent any attempt to rig the legislative elections in order to give a two-thirds majority to the ruling party, thus leading to the draft third mandate”.
In this context, it congratulates all its members in Guinea and abroad and urges them to be more vigilant.
Addressing the nation on Wednesday evening, President Conde instructed the Prime Minister to initiate consultations with state institutions, political parties, trade unions and civil society organizations to harness the views of both sides in an open exchange on the various issues so that the debate would focus on arguments and recommendations.
“Any subject can be discussed in a democracy. Guinea is no longer the same with the awakening of consciences and all the changes that have taken place in society. It is legitimate for everyone to ask where we are going, how to address the issues and challenges of new times. That is why I understand the ongoing debate in the country on all issues of concern, including the constitution. But, as I said before, it is not for me to decide or choose instead of the Guineans. Before taking a personal position, I have a duty to listen to everyone,” Condé said.
