South Africa and Interpol have teamed up to launch a dawn raid Thursday to apprehend Israel’s “most wanted gang leader” and his friends in a Bryanston home in the commercial city of Johannesburg.
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said it personnel confiscated five assault rifles, seven pistols, some US$40,000 and three suspected stolen motorcycles during the raid at the house, Mathe said.
The unnamed fugitive, aged 46, who has been on the run for seven years since Interpol’s Red Notice was issued, was arrested during an operation led by the two law enforcement agencies, he said.
The man was believed to be connected to a criminal organisation in Israel called the Abergil Organisation, which has been linked to drug trafficking, extortion and other criminal activities, the spokesperson said.
“He has been on Interpol’s Red Notice since 2015 and is wanted in Israel for conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder,” he added.
The man was arrested along with seven others at the Bryanston house, according to the official.
