Ireland has reaffirmed its commitment to the UN process to resolve the Sahara conflict. Minister for Foreign Affairs Michael Martin made the statement in response to a question from Sinn Féin MP Math Carthy in the Irish Parliament.
Martin emphasized that Ireland continues to strongly support the efforts of the UN, including MINURSO (United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) and the UN Secretary General’s Personal Envoy. He expressed the hope that these efforts would lead to a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution.
The Minister also referred to the recent UN Security Council resolution extending MINURSO’s mandate for one year. This extension is seen as a crucial step in maintaining stability in the region and continuing to work towards a peaceful solution. Martin called on all parties to the conflict, as well as the international community, to support the UN envoy and to cooperate fully with MINURSO.
Martin commended the ongoing efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, who has conducted several visits and consultations in the region. These initiatives are essential to understand the perspectives of the different parties and to promote constructive dialogue.
Ireland’s position on the Sahara conflict is not new. Ireland has long supported the efforts of the United Nations and encouraged the parties concerned to participate actively in the negotiations. The Minister recalled that Ireland has always advocated a diplomatic and peaceful approach to resolving this conflict.
In response to questions about the Polisario Front leader’s visit to Ireland earlier this year, Michael Martin clarified that the visit was unofficial. He emphasized that Ireland maintains a neutral and balanced position, seeking to support UN peace efforts without taking sides.
As a member of the international community, Ireland remains committed to contributing to peace and stability in the Sahara region. The Minister reiterated the importance of international cooperation and support for UN initiatives to achieve a lasting solution.
